Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, was born around the 6th century BCE in Lumbini, present-day Nepal. He was born into a royal family of the Shakya clan and led a sheltered life of luxury. However, after encountering the suffering of aging, sickness, and death outside his palace, he renounced his privileged life in search of a solution to human suffering.
