Guanyin Bodhisattva, also known as Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, is a key figure in Mahayana Buddhism, symbolizing compassion and mercy. The origins of Guanyin trace back to India, where Avalokiteshvara was first depicted as a male deity. Over time, the figure underwent transformation as the Bodhisattva’s compassionate qualities were emphasized. By the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), Guanyin began to be portrayed as female in China, reflecting the region's cultural and spiritual context. This shift reinforced her role as a nurturing, maternal protector of all beings, and she became one of the most widely venerated figures in East Asian Buddhism.
